Gold-in-quartz was formed while the earth was still in its molten state. During the cooling and solidification process, veins of gold became trapped with the crystals of quartz in the mine. This created a very dramatic contrast between the white quartz and the yellow of the gold. Jewelry made from gold quartz became quite a fashion statement of the 1880's.
An absolutely fabulous gold quartz and gold watch chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This fantastic chain is a handmade piece comprised of what appears to be 2 different gold quartz inlaid watch chains. The chains connect to each other to make a wonderful, longer watch chain which looks perfect worn alone or for displaying a complimentary locket or pendant. Made of rosy 14kt yellow gold, the chain is comprised of wonderfully detailed and ornate links. Each heavy link is inlaid with 2 plaques of gold quartz which is set into each side. The larger, rectangular shaped links attach to each other by ornate gold links that carry an intricate etched design. At the back of the chain is a watch swivel clasp and hanging from the center is a large gold barbell that hangs from 5 small links. A gorgeous necklace, it can be worn alone as a simple chain or with a complimentary pendant or locket.
Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures 17.5" long with a 1 1/4" extension and 1 3/4" barbell. The chain is 3/8" widest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the chain is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gold links and the clasps fasten securely and are in good working condition. There is some minor chipping in the inlaid gold quartz which is hardly noticeable when the chain is worn.
